Chair of Postgraduate Subcommittee - Erica Cook

Committee role:

To support the professional development of postgraduates within Health Psychology through encouraging development of knowledge and skils. The goal is to keep postgraduates up to date with developments relevant to training and development needs. In addition there are opportunities for postgraduates to interact and share experiences with the committe providing workshops, social networking events and 2 forums; healthpsychtraining@jiscmail.ac.uk and healthpsychologypostgraduatenet@jismail.ac.uk . The postgraduates viewpoint and any issues related to Postgraduates are disseminated by the sub-committee chair via DHP executive committee meetings.

Jot title at place of work:

PhD researcher, Institute for Health Research and Associate Lecturer at the Open University and University of Bedfordshire.

I am in my final year of PhD studies sponsored by NHS Direct. My research adopts a mixed method approach to determine the psychosocial and socio-demographic characteristics of NHS direct users. I am essentially determining and evaluating equity of health service provisions with the goal to shape policy and strategy and provide more "person-centred" health services to the public. I am also interested in how psychological processes shape our decision to seek care, and hope to develop theoretically driven interventions to increase utilisation across diverse population sub-groups.
